The anime is based on the light novel series by Puni-chan, with illustrations by Akeno Naruse. The story centers on Tiararose Lapis Clementille, a character initially presented as the villainess in the otome game 'Lapis Lazuli Ring.' Her path changes after a disagreement with her initial fiancé, Hartknights Lapis-Lazuli Lacmouth. She then receives a marriage proposal from Aquasteed Marinforest, the crown prince of a neighboring kingdom. This event redirects her destiny from potential exile to a future involving royal life and romance.

'The Villainess Is Adored by the Prince of the Neighbor Kingdom' originated as a web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2016. It subsequently expanded into a light novel series, with 14 volumes published under KADOKAWA's B'S-Log Bunko imprint as of 2023. The franchise also includes manga and otome game adaptations. The anime's voice cast will reprise their roles from the game.

The adaptation is being developed by a creative team that includes Takayuki Hamana, director of 'The Witch and the Beast,' and Yoshimi Narita, series composer for 'Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie.' Character designs are by Majiro, known for 'UniteUp! -Uni:Birth-.'
