Acclaimed 'A Witch's Life in Mongol' Manga Enters Hiatus as Author Takes Maternity Leave

Enthusiasts of historical manga must brace for a temporary pause as Tomato Soup's critically lauded series, "A Witch's Life in Mongol," officially enters an announced hiatus. Revealed in the November issue of Akita Shoten’s Mystery Bonita magazine, this bimonthly publication is taking a break to accommodate the author’s maternity leave, with an eager promise of resuming serialization next year. This temporary halt assures fans that the enthralling narrative is merely paused, not concluded, building anticipation for its grand return.
Since its initial serialization on Akita Shoten’s Souffle website in September 2021, and subsequent expansion to Mystery Bonita in March 2025, "A Witch's Life in Mongol" has captivated audiences and critics alike. The series quickly ascended to prominence, clinching the top spot in the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2023 rankings for female readers and earning prestigious nominations for the Manga Taisho Awards in both 2023 and 2024. These accolades underscore its masterful storytelling and breathtaking artwork.
The manga transports readers to the tumultuous 13th century, where Fatima, a brilliant young Persian woman, navigates the treacherous Mongol Empire court. Armed with advanced medical and scientific knowledge, she finds herself drawn into the intricate political web surrounding Töregene, the influential sixth wife of Ögedei Khan. The narrative skillfully weaves together historical accuracy with fictional intrigue, delving into profound themes of ambition, cross-cultural exchange, and the intricate dynamics of power during a period of immense global transformation.

The series' global reach is set to expand further, with Yen Press having secured the English licensing rights; its eagerly awaited first volume is scheduled for release in May 2025. Adding to the excitement, an anime adaptation titled "Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia" is currently in production by the renowned Science SARU studio, slated to premiere on TV Asahi in 2026.
While the hiatus presents a moment of reflection for both creators and the industry, it reaffirms the vibrant and evolving landscape of serialized manga. The enduring legacy of "A Witch’s Life in Mongol" as a benchmark in historical fiction remains undisputed, promising even greater depths of intrigue upon its anticipated comeback.
