Visionary Collaboration: Yasuomi Umetsu and Shaft Unleash Sci-Fi Action Epic 'Virgin Punk: Clockwork Girl' in Theaters

The original theatrical anime film, Virgin Punk: Clockwork Girl, officially launched its run in Japanese cinemas on June 27, 2025. This production is a collaboration between director Yasuomi Umetsu and animation studio Shaft, aiming to deliver a sci-fi action experience.

The narrative is set in the year 2099, a world reshaped by the Medical Android Technology known as 'Somadea.' While initially designed to enhance human health, Somadea's capabilities have been utilized to create a new generation of criminals who exploit its enhancements. The story centers on Ubu Kamigori, a bounty hunter tasked with pursuing individuals illegally modified by Somadea. Her mission takes an unexpected turn with the arrival of Mr. Elegance, a figure deeply connected to her past, initiating a journey of conflict and intrigue.

This cinematic event marks Umetsu's first full directorial role since 2014 and his inaugural partnership with Shaft, a studio recognized for works such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the Monogatari series. Umetsu himself spearheaded the character designs. Yuya Takahashi crafted the series composition and screenplay. Syoji Hata served as the sound director, with Yoshiaki Dewa composing the musical score.

For international audiences, limited U.S. theatrical screenings are scheduled for November 11 and 13, 2025. These showings will offer both original Japanese audio with subtitles and an English dubbed version. The English voice cast features Xanthe Huynh as Ubu Kamigori and David Cooley as Mr. Elegance. U.S. viewers will also receive an exclusive featurette, providing a behind-the-scenes look into the film's creative process.

This collaboration is positioned to contribute to the sci-fi action anime genre, blending Umetsu's directorial style with Shaft's animation techniques to create a cinematic experience.
