Yamaguchi-kun Isn't So Bad Manga Heads to Cinemas in June 2026 Starring Naniwa Danshi's Kyohei Takahashi

The highly anticipated manga series Yamaguchi-kun Isn't So Bad (Yamaguchi-kun wa Warukunai) by Yu Saiki is confirmed for a live-action film adaptation. The movie is scheduled for release on June 5, 2026. Kyohei Takahashi, a prominent member of the idol group Naniwa Danshi, will star as the lead character, Yamaguchi Asuka.
Yamaguchi is introduced as a transfer student characterized by a tough exterior, blonde hair, and a distinct Kansai dialect. The narrative centers on Satsuki Shinohara, a reserved high school girl whose plans for a quiet start to high school are disrupted when Yamaguchi unexpectedly assists her during a difficult situation.
Despite Yamaguchi's notorious reputation among his new peers, Satsuki is determined to look past his intimidating facade, believing in a genuine personality beneath the surface. The manga, which launched in 2019 in Kodansha's Bessatsu Friend magazine, has achieved significant success, boasting a circulation of over 2.1 million copies.

Although the series experienced a temporary hiatus in 2022 due to the author's maternity leave, it has since returned to a bimonthly publication schedule. For international readers, Kodansha USA offers digital access to the title in North America.
The casting of Kyohei Takahashi has been well received, particularly because his authentic Kansai accent and natural charisma align closely with the characteristics of the manga's protagonist, a detail that has pleased both the dedicated fanbase and the original creator. The film is directed by Kentarō Moriya and will be distributed to audiences by ASMIK Ace. This adaptation, combining youthful romance with compelling character development, is positioned as a major cinematic event.
