WatchMojo has released its latest ranking, the "Top 10 Most Hated Anime," immediately sparking debate among fans who argue several titles on the list are unfairly targeted. The ranking focuses on series where fan backlash may have gone too far, forcing a re-evaluation of some highly controversial productions.
The list is topped by the 2016-17 adaptation of Berserk, claiming the number one spot for "most hated." This choice is perhaps the least contentious, as fans universally condemned the heavy reliance on CGI. Many felt the 3D models butchered Kentaro Miura’s detailed dark fantasy art, especially when compared to the beloved 90s hand-drawn version. The failure of a proper sequel to materialize since then speaks volumes about the reception, though the adaptation’s raw depiction of Guts’ suffering continues to draw in new viewers.
Further down the list, Dragon Ball GT takes the seventh spot. This non-canon 1996-97 run, which famously saw Goku revert to a child, never quite captured the magic of the original or Z, largely due to lacking direct manga guidance. Despite those flaws, the introduction of Super Saiyan 4 remains a high point for many, and time has softened its reputation, relegating it to guilty-pleasure status during reruns.
Landing at number ten is Platinum End. The 2021-22 adaptation from Death Note creators Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata often drew fire for weak character development and a messy conclusion. Defenders of the series, which is available to stream on Crunchyroll, point to its darker supernatural elements and moral quandaries, suggesting the premise only needed tighter execution to match its creators' pedigree.

The entire ranking is currently fueling online arguments over whether these shows truly earned their negative reputations or if they are simply victims of high expectations and harsh fandom scrutiny.
