
Veteran voice actor Kōzō Shioya, known globally as the definitive voice of Majin Buu in the Dragon Ball franchise, has passed away at the age of 71. His talent agency, Aoni Production, confirmed the news, stating Shioya died on January 20, 2026, following a cerebral hemorrhage. The family held a private service.
Shioya’s most enduring legacy is his portrayal of Majin Buu across the entire Dragon Ball saga. He voiced every iteration of the character, from the terrifying Kid Buu to the heroic pink versions, appearing in Dragon Ball Z, GT, Kai, and Dragon Ball Super, alongside numerous video game appearances. The recent Dragon Ball Daima utilized Shiho Amuro for Mini Buu.
Beyond the Z Fighters, Shioya held significant roles in other major series spanning four decades. One Piece fans recognize his work as Genzo, Pappag, and Weevil. He also voiced Jigumo in Naruto and Motokichi Kinuta in World Trigger. His early career established him in classics like Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Ranma 1/2, and Transformers: Super-God Masterforce.
His extensive career, running from the 1980s into the 2020s, also included substantial work in Japanese dubbing for Western media. He provided Japanese voices for projects including The Muppets, Mulan, and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Tokusatsu fans knew him from Gekiso Sentai Carranger and Hyakuju Sentai Gaoranger.

Shioya was born on August 18, 1955, in Kagoshima Prefecture. He was part of a voice acting family; his younger brother, Yoku Shioya, is also active in the industry. Aoni Production extended gratitude for the support Shioya received throughout his long career.
