Production company VAP today announced that Ayaka Katayama's dark sci-fi manga, Fungus and Iron, is officially receiving a TV anime adaptation. The news arrived alongside a teaser visual and a special illustration from Katayama herself.
The series has run in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shonen Magazine since March 2021. It centers on Dante, a top soldier considered an oddity in a world dominated by fungi. His isolated life changes after he meets Aoi, an encounter that sparks a rebellion against the oppressive fungal regime.
Katayama's work has garnered significant attention, including praise from Attack on Titan creator Hajime Isayama for its exploration of freedom and humanity amidst despair. The author took a break in 2021 for maternity leave, with serialization resuming in 2022.
Katayama expressed her reaction to the announcement, stating she was initially in disbelief but is now savoring the joy. She noted the scripts and visuals show genuine care for the established world.

In Japan, Kodansha has compiled eight volumes of the manga, with the ninth volume set for release on April 9, 2026. Kodansha USA handles the English digital releases, having put out volume eight last month.
As of reporting, details regarding the animation staff, voice cast, or a specific premiere window remain undisclosed. Fans should monitor the official website and the @animekintotetsu account on X for updates.
