Netflix's 'Chou Kaguya-hime!' Drops Explosive New Trailer, Reveals Full Cast and Theme Song Details for 2026 Premiere

The highly anticipated original anime film, Chou Kaguya-hime! (or Cosmic Princess Kaguya!), has received a significant update from Netflix. This feature is scheduled for an exclusive worldwide debut on January 22, 2026, and aims to modernize the ancient Japanese folktale, 'The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter,' through a dynamic, contemporary narrative.
The project is helmed by Shingo Yamashita, who is making his transition to feature-length direction after gaining acclaim for his visually stunning opening sequences on major titles such as Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man. The story immerses viewers in the virtual world of Tsukuyomi, where music serves as the foundation for the powerful bond between the two central characters, Iroha Sakayori and Kaguya, who operate as virtual idols.
Production Details and Ensemble Cast
Reflecting the film's core musical theme, Chou Kaguya-hime! features an exceptional soundtrack crafted by prominent figures in the Vocaloid community. This lineup includes ryo (supercell), kz (livetune), 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot. The main theme song and integrated soundtrack are expected to be crucial not only for the film's emotional impact but also for driving the progression of its story.

Netflix has confirmed the lead voice ensemble, featuring Yuuko Natsuyoshi as Kaguya, Saori Hayami portraying Runami Yachiyo, and Anna Nagase as Iroha Sakayori. The visual identity of the project is defined by character designs from Akihiro Nagae (known for Drifting Home) and Hechima (The Idolmaster Gakuen). Further technical direction includes Saeri Natsuo co-writing the screenplay, Naoya Nakayama overseeing musical performances, and Masaya Machida serving as CG director.
Beyond the cinematic release, the franchise is set for rapid expansion in early 2026. A manga adaptation by Tarou Yoneda is scheduled to launch in Comptiq magazine on January 9, 2026, with the first compiled volume following on February 10. Additionally, a novelization penned by Naruto Kiriyama, supervised directly by Director Yamashita and featuring illustrations by Asao Urata, is slated for publication on January 30, 2026. This novelization promises to include additional scenes not featured in the main film.
Chou Kaguya-hime! is positioned to be a genre-blending highlight of the 2026 anime calendar, successfully merging classic Japanese mythology with contemporary virtual technology and music production.
