Global Sensation 'Girl Crush' Manga Secures TV Anime Adaptation, Pioneering K-Pop Idol Genre

The manga series Girl Crush, created and illustrated by Midori Tayama, is officially receiving a television anime adaptation. This announcement confirms that the series is set to become the first domestic Japanese anime explicitly focused on the intense world of K-Pop idols. Industry leaders TBS Television and ENISHIYA are managing the planning and production duties for the series, which is scheduled to air on TBS and affiliated networks.
Since its debut in 2019 under LINE Manga’s Comic Nicola label, a collaboration between the fashion publication Nicola and Comic Bunch, Girl Crush has developed a substantial readership. The series currently boasts a circulation exceeding 900,000 copies. As of late 2025, eight digital volumes and four print volumes have been released.
The narrative centers on Tenka Momose, a student characterized by apparent perfection and high academic achievement. Her path changes significantly after she meets Erian Satou, an ordinary but highly driven classmate dedicated to achieving her ambition of becoming a global K-Pop sensation. Their contrasting personalities and shared ambition form the core of a powerful coming-of-age story. The series documents the rigorous discipline, relentless competition, and emotional sacrifices necessary to succeed in the demanding South Korean music industry.
The compelling storyline has achieved global recognition, including the prestigious New Work of the Year Award at the 2021 RIDIBOOKS COMIC AWARD for its Korean translation. Creator Midori Tayama expressed her enthusiasm for the project, noting her deep appreciation for the animation team’s genuine respect and understanding of the source material. Tayama stated her eagerness to see protagonist Tenka’s emotional and professional journey vividly realized through animation.
Accompanying the adaptation news, the production team unveiled a new key visual. The artwork prominently features Tenka Momose, whose assured expression captures the story’s dynamic energy and emotional depth.

Furthermore, a commemorative video showcasing pivotal moments from the manga has been released, significantly increasing anticipation among dedicated fans and music anime enthusiasts. This adaptation is positioned to capitalize on the growing global interest in K-Pop culture, representing a pioneering blend of Japanese anime production with Korean pop themes, following the international reception of related content.
With English editions published by VIZ Media and Comikey, Girl Crush is prepared to influence the landscape of music-themed anime and the representation of K-Pop in media globally.
