The anime film adaptation of Keigo Higashino’s mystery novel Kusunoki no Bannin (The Camphorwood Custodian) has confirmed five major additions to its voice cast just weeks ahead of its premiere. Official channels revealed that Kenjirou Tsuda, Tomokazu Sugita, Taku Yashiro, Reina Ueda, and Nobuo Tobita are joining the project. Specific roles for this new group remain undisclosed at the time of reporting.

They join the previously announced leads, Fumiya Takahashi as Reito Naoi and Yuuki Amami as Chifune Yanagisawa. The core cast centered around the mysterious camphorwood tree also includes Takehito Koyasu as Masakazu Yanagisawa, Mio Tanaka as Katsushige Yanagisawa, and Akira Kamiya as Toichiro Oba.
The film is set to hit Japanese theaters on January 30, 2026. A-1 Pictures is handling the animation, with its Psyde Kick Studio label managing production.
In a significant move to reward early theater attendees, staff also announced a special bonus: a brand-new text story written by author Keigo Higashino himself. Titled Kusunoki no Urawaza (The Camphorwood’s Secret Power), this short piece will be distributed exclusively to moviegoers.
The bonus story dives into the background of Masakazu and reveals a previously unknown ability of the camphorwood tree that was not detailed in the original novel or the film adaptation. This marks the first time Higashino has created exclusive text content specifically for moviegoers.
Tsubasa Yamaguchi, known for Blue Period, is handling character designs alongside Akiko Itagaki. Yugo Kanno is composing the score, and Hiroshi Takiguchi serves as the art director. The theme song, "Katawara nite Tsukiyo" (Moonlit Night By My Side), is performed by Uru.
