Director Shingo Yamashita is making his feature directorial debut with the original anime film Cosmic Princess Kaguya! Netflix confirmed the movie will premiere globally on January 22, 2026, dropping new key art and a fresh trailer as the release date approaches. The project takes the classic Japanese folktale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter and reimagines it as a musical sci-fi fantasy set in the near future.
The story centers on Iroha Sakayori, a high school student living a normal life in Tokyo until she discovers a baby emerging from a glowing utility pole. This infant rapidly grows into Kaguya, a runaway from the Moon who then pulls Iroha into the virtual world of Tsukuyomi. Their adventures involve performances within this digital space. The trailer hints at their developing bond and promises a happier resolution than the tragic ending of the original Kaguya story.
Yamashita is known for directing the acclaimed opening animations for the first seasons of both Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man. He is leading the production effort from Studio Colorido and Studio Chromato. Character designs were handled by Akihiro Nagae and Hechima.

The main voice cast includes Yūko Natsuyoshi as Kaguya, Anna Nagase as Iroha, Saori Hayami as Yachiyo Runami, and Rie Kugimiya voicing Fushi. Additional cast announcements and English dub details are expected later this year.
Visually, the film blends strong sci-fi aesthetics with fantasy settings. The soundtrack features contributions from prominent Vocaloid producers, including Ryo (Supercell), Yuigot, Aqu3ra, HoneyWorks, 40mP, and Kz (Livetune).
This film marks the third feature under Studio Colorido’s existing deal with Netflix, following 2022’s Drifting Home and 2024’s My Oni Girl. A special screening is scheduled for the debut day at Grand Cinema Sunshine in Toshima. The latest trailer is currently available on Netflix's official YouTube channel.
