The Tokyo Anime Award Festival (TAAF) 2026 has officially announced its distinguished list of Achievement Award recipients. This recognition honors individuals who have profoundly shaped the global landscape of anime and animation culture through their lifetime contributions.
Celebrating its 21st iteration since its inception in 2005, the prestigious award seeks to spotlight excellence across technical skill, talent development, and overall industry advancement. With this newest cohort, the total number of recognized individuals who have defined the art form reaches 215.
The lineup for 2026 features a gallery of legends spanning critical decades of production. Headlining the honorees is directorial titan Mamoru Oshii, whose revolutionary works set new benchmarks for visual aesthetics and complex narrative structure in modern animation.

Oshii is celebrated for seminal cyberpunk classics like Ghost in the Shell and the influential mecha series Mobile Police Patlabor. Joining him is manga artist and character design pioneer Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, recognized for his foundational visual conceptualization and mechanical design, particularly within the iconic Mobile Suit Gundam franchise.
The festival also recognizes producer Takayuki Matsutani, known for his work on significant titles such as The Rose of Versailles Boy, and manga artist Keiko Takemiya, whose groundbreaking contributions defined the narrative depth and scope of shojo and science fiction manga.
Technical excellence is honored with the inclusion of animation art director Nizo Yamamoto, whose meticulous and evocative background work graced Studio Ghibli masterpieces, including Castle in the Sky and Grave of the Fireflies. Further cementing the diverse nature of the awards, veteran voice actress Mami Koyama is celebrated for her extensive career bringing beloved characters to life.
Animator Masaaki Mori and animation historian Takashi Namiki complete the list, ensuring that both the technical mastery of creation and the scholarly preservation of anime history receive due acknowledgment.
Scheduled to run from March 13 to 16, the TAAF 2026 promises comprehensive programs and special exhibitions dedicated to showcasing the enduring legacy of these award winners. The anticipation surrounding the event was recently heightened by the release of a promotional video, narrated by Atsumi Tanezaki, the celebrated voice actress from Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, which itself secured the Anime of the Year Award at the previous TAAF ceremony.
