Revenger

Set in late Edo period Japan, 'Revenger' follows Raizo Kurima, a samurai who was betrayed by his superiors and tricked into killing his prospective father-in-law. Overwhelmed by guilt and loss after his fiancée’s suicide, Raizo joins the Revengers, a secretive group of hitmen who take revenge on behalf of those powerless to seek justice. Operating under the cover of a general store called Ribenjiya, the Revengers include a physician with destructive impulses, a beautiful and androgynous young man, a gambler, and a skilled lacquer craftsman. Together, they navigate dangerous missions and build an unusual camaraderie while confronting corruption and crime in Nagasaki.

'Revenger' is noted for its stylish animation and mature storytelling, blending traditional samurai themes with a darker, grittier narrative. The series explores themes of betrayal, redemption, and justice through complex characters and clever plot twists. While some viewers praise its unique setting and character dynamics, others find the pacing uneven. The involvement of Gen Urobuchi as writer adds depth and intrigue to the story.
