Upon returning to the normal world, Oz discovers that ten years have elapsed, and he is immediately recruited by the clandestine Pandora organization, which studies the Abyss and its associated entities, the Chains. The core plot revolves around Oz and Alice's quest to recover Alice's fragmented memories, which are crucial to understanding the century-old conspiracy known as the Tragedy of Sablier and the true nature of Oz's mysterious connection to the Abyss. A significant strength lies in the voice acting, particularly Yūki Kaji as Oz Vessalius and Kenyuu Horiuchi as Xerxes Break, whose performances lend necessary emotional weight and complexity to their roles, skillfully navigating the shifts between levity and dramatic intensity. The storytelling, however, presents a dense structure, heavily reliant on flashbacks and intertwined plot threads related to the Tragedy of Sablier. While this narrative complexity rewards patient viewers with thematic richness regarding fate and identity, the pacing can feel uneven, especially in the middle arc where exposition dominates. Character development is exceptional; Oz’s transformation from an innocent noble to someone grappling with profound historical guilt is handled with maturity. Ultimately, the series excels in exploring deep concepts of moral ambiguity and the search for belonging, solidifying its standing as a powerful dramatic fantasy, despite the necessity of external source material (the manga) to fully resolve all narrative threads introduced in the anime's conclusion.
