Overview
Nanana's Buried Treasure is a captivating supernatural adventure and mystery series centered around the artificial academic island of Nanaejima, a unique zone established by the legendary group of adventurers known as the GREAT7. The narrative begins with Jūgo Yama, a high school student who, having been disowned by his father, transfers to the island and secures residence in a notoriously cheap apartment. This seemingly ordinary dwelling harbors a supernatural tenant: the ghost of Nanana Ryūgajō, a brilliant and beloved adventurer who was mysteriously assassinated ten years prior. Nanana's spirit is permanently tethered to her former room, where she spends her time playing video games and consuming massive amounts of pudding. Jūgo quickly learns that before her death, Nanana secreted away a massive collection of powerful, wish-granting artifacts—collectively known as Nanana's Buried Treasure—across the island. These treasures are highly sought after by various factions, including fellow students and remnants of the GREAT7, all of whom are motivated by power, wealth, or the desire to solve Nanana's murder. Jūgo, intent on finding the killer and solving the mystery of the treasures, forms the Adventure Club alongside Tensai Ikkyū, a sharp-witted detective girl, and D'arc Hoshino, a mysterious, cross-dressing acquaintance. The series excels in its episodic structure, showcasing elaborate treasure hunts filled with complex traps and riddles that test the group’s ingenuity, all while slowly peeling back the layers of Nanaejima's history and the dark secrets surrounding Nanana’s untimely demise.
Opinion
Nanana's Buried Treasure is an aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound entry into the mystery-adventure genre, largely benefiting from A-1 Pictures' competent animation quality. The visual presentation is characterized by vibrant color palettes, fluid action sequences during treasure trap encounters, and expressive character designs that effectively convey personality. The setting of Nanaejima is rendered with high detail, giving the artificial island a tangible sense of wonder and history. Critically, the pacing is generally successful in the episodic treasure hunt format, allowing for adequate build-up, riddle solving, and resolution within 24-minute segments. However, the overarching plot concerning Nanana's murder often takes a backseat, which sometimes results in a slightly rushed or underdeveloped conclusion to the main mystery arc by the final episodes. Character development is handled skillfully; the ensemble cast, particularly Jūgo, Tensai, and D'arc, exhibit believable synergy and growth as their motivations are gradually revealed. The voice acting, featuring talents like Aoi Yūki (Nanana) and Natsuki Hanae (Jūgo), is strong, adding charisma and emotional weight to the roles. Thematically, the anime explores concepts of legacy, trust, and the pursuit of truth, underpinned by a compelling blend of supernatural power and logical deduction, making it a highly engaging, though occasionally narratively uneven, viewing experience.
